That sounds practical! Could you share where you bought it from?
I got mine online. Many come with a lid to keep out moisture, which is super helpful in keeping the grit dry.
I just use a simple garden pot turned upside down with a hole cut for access. It’s rustic but gets the job done!
That’s a creative idea, janehudson! Have you found it easy to clean, or does it tend to accumulate dirt?
It’s a breeze to clean! I just flip it over and rinse it out. It’s also a good conversation starter when people see it!
For cleaning, I recommend feeders that can easily be disassembled. It makes maintenance less of a chore.
Totally agree, tannercharles! I’ve seen some really complicated designs that don’t allow for easy access, and it drives me nuts!
Related to that, does anyone know if certain materials are better for chickens? I’ve heard they prefer not to peck at certain metals.
I think plastic is generally safer. Some metals can cause injury if the chickens get too curious!
I can’t believe I thought using a composite material would work. Turns out it wasn’t safe at all! Lesson learned.
Oh no, llynch! I can only imagine the panic! Did your chickens make it through okay?
Yep, all good! Just a bit scarred on the material choice. Now I stick to known feeders, like those from XYZ brand.
It actually is important! Chickens digest them differently, and separating them prevents waste. Plus, it’s easier for them to access what they need.
Thanks for that info! It really clears up the confusion for me.
I recommend using solid feeders that minimize access for pests. Look for ones with covers or weight-activated openings.
Why can’t we just throw grit and oyster shells in a regular feeder? Is it really that important to separate them?
I’ve struggled with my hens refusing to use the oyster shell feeder. Have you tried mixing it with their regular feed?
I found that adding a little bit of vinegar inside the feeder can help deter pests too!
That’s a great idea! My chickens seem to prefer it when I sprinkle the grit on their food.
Absolutely! I’ve had to toss out stale grit before. No one wants that mess!
