Is Sand the Best Bedding for My Chicken Coop?

Exactly! Plus, I think my chickens are happier with sand. They love scratching around in it.

I’ve found that the sand actually helps keep the coop cooler in the summer. It’s an unexpected benefit!

I was skeptical at first, but my chickens seem healthier with sand. It may be worth the switch for others considering it.

How often do you all replace the sand? Is it necessary to change it completely or just top it off?

I usually just top it off every couple of weeks unless it gets pretty dirty. Then I do a full clean.

Nice! I feel like I’m always cleaning with straw. How much sand do you recommend starting with?

About 3-4 inches should be good, but it depends on your coop size. Just make sure it’s deep enough for drainage.

Has anyone had issues with sand ‘sifting’ out of the coop? I’m concerned about my yard turning into a beach!

Haha! I use a barrier of boards to keep the sand in place. It works pretty well.

I wonder if some types of sand attract pests more than others? I want to make sure my chickens are safe.

Great point! I read that fine sand can attract more pests, so I choose coarser sand for better control.

All in all, switching to sand has saved me a lot of headaches. Definitely worth considering for anyone on the fence!

I’m considering sand for my coop too! How do you keep it clean and fresh? I heard it can harbor pests if not maintained properly.

To maintain sand in your coop, I’d recommend replacing it every 6-12 months, depending on how many chickens you have. Regular raking helps, too!

I find that using a sift helps keep the sand clean. You can remove the droppings and debris without replacing the whole batch! What about using diatomaceous earth?

Diatomaceous earth is great! Just sprinkle it lightly on the sand. It helps with pests and keeps the area dry. Works wonders for hygiene!

I’ve been using sand for over a year and rarely change it completely. I spot clean every week. As for pests, I’ve heard cedar chips can deter them!

That’s a solid plan! I usually replace mine twice a year and lift the sand to allow it to breathe – keeps odors down.

Anyone have experience with a sand and straw mix? I’m curious if it would help with comfort and cleaning.
