What Should I Know About the White Rock Chicken Breed?

Fun fact: White Rock chickens also have great temperament! They are friendly and good with kids, which is a bonus for family farms. Who wouldn’t want friendly chickens?

That’s awesome! I’m looking for a breed that’s not only productive but also good company. Any other recommendations?

If you’re looking for more friendly breeds, consider Orpingtons or Bard Rocks! They have similar laying abilities and offer great company too.

I wonder how they compare to other breeds in terms of egg production! Does anyone have experience with that?

In my experience, White Rock chickens lay just as well as Leghorns but with better personality! They may not be the top layer, but their eggs are worth it.

That’s a solid point! I’ve heard stories about how some chickens seem to have attitudes - do White Rocks have any quirky behaviors?

I’ve raised White Rock chickens for a couple of years now. They are incredibly friendly and sociable, both with humans and other birds. They usually follow me around the yard, which is pretty charming!

That’s great to hear! I’ve read that their sociability can vary though. Have you experienced any standoffish behavior from them?

In my experience, White Rocks are really easy to handle. They’re curious and love interacting with people. I’ve even trained mine to come when called with treats! Just be patient and consistent.

I’ve got a mixed flock, and the White Rocks tend to get along well with other breeds. It’s interesting how they fit right in without causing any trouble. Good choice for a starter flock!

I love that! What type of treats do you use for training them? I want to start teaching mine some tricks too.

I use mealworms as treats; they go crazy for them! Also, being gentle while handling them helps a lot. They can get startled easily, so approach them calmly.

I’ve had fewer handling issues than I expected. They’re quite trainable, but I’ve heard some folks say their chickens can be skittish. Maybe it’s just the individual bird’s personality?

Yes, I found that too! Each bird has its unique temperament. Some of mine are super friendly, while others prefer to keep their distance. Just let them be themselves!

So true! Do you think they bond more with one person in a household?

Definitely! They seem to have favorites. I find that spending quality time with them helps strengthen that bond. It’s wonderful to see them come running when they hear your voice!

Ha! I think my White Rock thinks I’m just a walking food dispenser. Should I be worried about that? I mean, they do seem to enjoy my company!

Not at all! It’s a compliment! They love your presence, even if food is a big part of it. Just enjoy the quirky relationship!
