What Small Breed Ducks Work Best as Pets?

Introduction

I’ve been doing a bit of research on small breed ducks as I’m considering adding a few to my backyard setup. I’ve heard that Call ducks and some other small varieties can make delightful pets, but I’m not entirely sure where to start. I’m hoping to gather some insights from fellow duck enthusiasts!

Why Small Breed Ducks?

Small breed ducks are often easier to manage than larger breeds, making them a great choice for anyone with limited space or those looking to keep them as pets. However, they don’t just make great pets; they can also be beneficial for gardens, helping with pest control.

Popular Small Duck Breeds

  • Call Ducks: Colorful and vocal, these small ducks are quite friendly and adapt well to different environments. They can be a bit noisy, but their personality makes up for it!
  • Runner Ducks: Known for their upright posture and unique waddling, Runner ducks are also quite sociable and can be a joy to watch.
  • Buff Ducks: This breed is a bit larger than Call ducks but still considered small. They have a calm demeanor and produce a good number of eggs, making them a practical choice.

Care Requirements

Housing: It’s essential to provide adequate shelter for ducks, especially at night. A small coop with proper ventilation is vital. Make sure there’s enough space for them to roam during the day!

Diet: Small ducks require a balanced diet. Starter feed is crucial for ducklings, while adults can enjoy a mix of grains, greens, and commercial duck pellets.

Water: Ducks love water! It’s essential for their health; they need access to a deep enough water source for cleaning and bathing.
